Such a beautiful day and so nice to see more and more people picking up paddle boarding. The harbour was buzzing with people doing lessons, kids having fun, paddlers doing fitness training or just enjoying a ride =) I was going to take my pooch out but decided I wanted to paddle further which turned out good because the wind was a bit funny and occasionally the chops got a bit stronger. Went all the way to Naval Pt (right when the wind was blowing my way, great work out! =) ) and cruised back down across Cass Bay. Did another loop around the bay and stopped in the middle on the way back to sit and relax while enjoying the stunning view.

Cha Chou a donné son avis sur Lake Hayes
Queenstown - Nouvelle-Zélande
Ajouté le 15 janvier 2019 23:31:27Another beautiful spot just North of Queenstown. Easily accessible both by car/bike or bus from Lake Hayes Estate (the buses don't stop along the highway so you have to get off at the Estate and walk, takes ~10min). There is no rental at the lake but you might be able to rent a board in Queenstown (there are rentals there) if you don't have your own gear. The Reserve at the North end of the Lake has plenty of space to park/launch but you can launch from the Southern access as well (might need to walk for a bit though, and it's a bit like a mangrove on that end so might not be the easiest to paddle out). I believe it is more sheltered than Lake Wakatipu, however it is still a mountain lake so could likely get quite gusty too. It's certainly a more relaxed spot than the buzz of Queenstown's main beach but I would definitely recommend a paddle from there as well (awesome on a windless evening sunset or at sunrise =).

**not an actual paddle**
I've rarely been so gutted not to have my board with me :'( However the hike around the lake from Lake Hayes Estate to Arrowtown (~10kms) is stunning and I most certainly recommend it =) So many people on their boards that day, it was absolutely stunning with no wind & really warm. I will be back with my gear for sure as there are plenty of spots around Queenstown. -
Cha Chou a donné son avis sur Lake Ruataniwha
Twizel - Nouvelle-Zélande
Ajouté le 15 janvier 2019 07:16:04Awesome spot in an awesome location. Unlike most of the other Southern Lakes, because it is a recreational area, there is a rental on site (at the campsite, though they might only operate through summer). There are a couple access points but the easiest (and probably safest as Ruataniwha is a dam lake) is by the campsite at the recreation reserve. Plenty of space to park and launch. Best to come early in the morning if visiting during the summer holidays as it tends to get very busy (well for NZ standards at least :p). You can either stay around the sheltered lagoon area near the campsite or go to the longer part of the lake which is also the National Rowing Centre -but that part is open to motorboats so be careful if you do. You might also not be allowed on that section of the lake during rowing competitions. The views are spectacular with 360˚C worth of mountain tops and an incredibly clear turquoise water. Bonus snow in the winter. The lake is located 5min away from the township of Twizel (made famous after some scenes from Lord of the Rings were filmed in the area). There is plenty of accomodation and cafes/shops/eateries. Really cool little place, might not always figure on the main touristy destination but I certainly recommend it as a base for anyone keen to explore the local lakes -Tekapo/Pukaki-Mt Cook area, Ohau etc..

First paddle of the year =) And what a perfect day for it: new spot, my favorite little (doggy) paddler with me, the fam out (almost everyone tried the board, big hit!), no wind and sunshine! Can't beat it! Glad we went early on in the morning though as lots of people came to the lake around lunchtime for the afternoon. I paddled to the other side of the lagoon and back through the campsite. Didn't venture out on the big open longer section as it is not closed to motorboats (lots of water-skiing). Nice to see other paddlers out and lots of dog owners keen to give it a go with their furry friends =) Really cool spot.

Finally a sunny morning with no wind in the weekend!! So good to get back on the water. Flat water, warm day, no one in sight, it was perfect! =) Saw so many fishes jumping out of the water and little flounders zooming away to hide in the sand. I have rarely seen the water so clear, it was like doing one of these glass bottom boats in tropical water (though some parts were really gross, the oil sleek was really bad and the smell wasn't nice either!). Also picked up a fully grown specimen of plastic bag -and can see how easily it is for marine life to get them confused with jellyfish :'( Yet this spot is still one of my favourites around as the ground below the water changes all the time with the tides and currents and no two days are ever the same for the view =)

Beautiful morning paddle =) Nice to see a few kayakers out on such a nice day too. Went over to the other side of the estuary, did a bit of yoga in the middle since there was almost no wind and practice speeding on my way back. The river was flowing really fast after all that rain from the day before, so strong current and I was going against the tide as well! So great workout overall =)

Took the kayaks out for a family paddle in the harbour... but my dog decided she likes the paddleboard better and refused to board =D So we ended up splitting up and taking turns paddling out/playing ball on the shore! =D Went from the yacht club to the Lighthouse and back. The weather was absolute rubbish most of the weekend sadly -gale force Southerly and rain/sleet/hail!!!- so no chance to go out early in the morning to find dolphins :'( better luck next time!

From a couple of weeks back. A nice morning session though quite windy on the way towards the spit, took me forever to get around the corner so turned around and cruised the tide and wind back and went for a wee loop behind the jetty instead. Neat workout and nice the sun came out a little at the end =)

Gorgeous day today, no wind at all when I left about an hour before high tide, and only slight chops on the way back. Lots of herons by the jetty when I headed out and a couple of shags in the water but otherwise no one else on the water today, everyone must still be up on the slopes :p Tried to do a bit more fitness than usual by paddling at a constant pace and work on speed but the day was so nice I kept stopping to take photos so gave up on that part halfway through and just cruised on the way back =D
