A very quick paddle on the lagoon to practice my beach race running starts and exits.
When Amble pier was renovated in 2000 the small beach within the harbour was enclosed to form a permant, though tidal, lagoon. This is a small venue best suited for teaching or drills. It's enclosed nature also makes it a good place for children and the inexperienced to get some confidence in a sheltered environment. That said, with ample parking and easy access this also makes a great place for a quick evening or morning paddle. There is a soft, sandy beach between the two carparks with a reasonably steep drop off so wading is kept to a minimum. The lagoon remains wet at all tide states but outside the two hours each side of high water it amounts to little more than an oversized puddle. There are rocks along the southern and eastern edges which are obvious and easily avoided. Approximately an hour either side of high tide it is possible to paddle over the retaining casements and into the harbour (high enough tide/short enough fins); this can be either a good thing if you've just paddled down the Coquet and want a nice beach landing or a bad thing if you have over exuberant beginners/children in your care. The casements are made of corrugated steel driven into the estuary bed and then filled with sand so be careful of your fins!! Parking and access is easy and there are plenty of cafés, chip shops, pubs and restaurants within easy walking distance. @SUPAyr https://supayr.wordpress.com
