Took the kayaks out for a family paddle in the harbour... but my dog decided she likes the paddleboard better and refused to board =D So we ended up splitting up and taking turns paddling out/playing ball on the shore! =D Went from the yacht club to the Lighthouse and back. The weather was absolute rubbish most of the weekend sadly -gale force Southerly and rain/sleet/hail!!!- so no chance to go out early in the morning to find dolphins :'( better luck next time!

Introducing 3months old puppy Torx to paddle boarding =) A lot easier with another SUP pooch around ;) Both had lots of fun! And the water is still quite warm so that always helps. Great day out on the water!

Not on a SUP for a change, but what an awesome day for it. Hottest weekend of the year so far, 30˚C+ and even though it was super windy, on the water it was still stinking hot! =D Paddled from Children's Bay to Red Point and had a good look on the rocks. Saw lots of little fish in the water at Children's Bay that morning but not so much in the heat of the arvo. No stingray or dolphins either :'( But the water was the clearest I've ever seen in the crater and I really wish that I had my snorkelling gear with me (and that the camera didn't die 5min into the paddle :'(!!! So gutted!!!). Bit of a challenge in that strong wind but good fun surfing the waves in the harbour though I reckon the SUPers we passed on the way out didn't have such a fun time :p Was actually glad to be sitting in and not standing on a SUP for once =D Nice to see more paddlers coming out that way and the rental guy being so busy on such a lovely weekend =)

Two paddles that day, first I took my little paddler to the boats sheds and afterwards I went round the bay. Sooooo windy on my way back, strong ENE pushing me away from the beach so took me ages to get back. Good for the muscles tho! =) Saw a couple of fish and plenty of sea birds. No sting rays sadly :(
Nice to see a lot more people paddling in Akaroa this year, first time I've seen so many on the water =)

Good weather for a fun paddle over the long weekend. 3 paddlers, SUP&Kayaks, started off on the SUP playing around in Children's Bay and taking my puppy out on the water. Then switched to the kayak and paddled to Daly's Wharf and back -really cool to go under the wharf. Was hoping to do a bit of SUP surfing at Le Bons Bay also but it was way too cold that day and the waves were pretty much inexistant so no regrets.

Last paddle of 2015 and first few paddles of 2016 =) Fun family times around Akaroa Harbour. First time taking my pup for a longer paddle on my own -she loved it! Couple of times around Childrens' Bay, paddle to Red Point, paddle from the yacht club to the Lighthouse, and paddle around Takamatua Bay with my 4 legged friend. Saw 2 stingrays in Childrens' Bay, heaps of little fish and some herons, but the boys got even luckier and had 2 Hector's dolphins (NZ very own smallest species of oceanic dolphin, sorry no photos :( ). Calm and flat most of the time, bit of Southerly wind on last day, bit choppy on occasion but overall fantastic weather and conditions! Itinerary a bit funny as I tried to load every spots I went to at once :p Definitely the most scenic location to paddle in Canterbury =)

      *** Happy New Year Paddlers!!! =) ***

Fun paddling around Children's Bay in Akaroa, enjoying the sunshine and cruising around with the dog. First trip on kayak then 2d trip on SUP -the dog has spoken, SUP is definitely her favorite =) Distance and time approx.

Absolutely stunning spot (how often do you get to paddle in the crater of an extinct volcano? :p), especially with the first and last lights of the day. Great for either a wee paddle around, bit of fitness of touring further around (lots of nice bays around the northern end of the harbour). Usually best in the morning before the wind picks up. Easy access from Akaroa township with launch either at the Rec Ground, main beach or by the yacht club. Easy access from other surrounding bays as well. Check the tide and the wind! Currents and wind can be very (very!) strong. Best in incoming tide and avoid notherly winds (push you towards entrance of the harbour). Mind boat traffic too, lots in the summer time (jetskis, speed boat, and also cruise ship tenders, best to stay away from main wharf those days). Beautiful beaches to relax post session and excellent coffee/wine/food in Akaroa. Lots of nice (and quieter) bays around the Peninsula to explore as well. BYO gear or rentals from the Akaroa Adventure Centre. A few paddles: -easy paddles from the Rec Ground beach to Daly's Wharf/Main Wharf or the Lighthouse in Akaroa (shortish paddles) - paddle from Rec Ground to Red Point (crosses Children's Bay which is the waterski lane area) (bit longer of a paddle, heaps of mussels at Red Point if you fancy bringing home some dinner) - paddle from Akaroa to Takamatua (long if return trip) - Robinson's Bay beach to wharf (short) etc... Only rate this spot 3 *** for safety/beginners/families as the harbour can get really tricky in the wrong conditions (at least a few kayak rescues every summer, mostly people going too far towards the heads and getting tired/trapped in crap weather) so always check the conditions and dont go out if you're not sure. Icing on the cake: great wildlife with huge stingrays leaving around the wharf and chances of spotting the resident Hector's dolphins (smallest and rarest dolphin in the world!) =)
