Rupert Vidion reviewed River Coquet - Warkworth
      Morpeth - United Kingdom
      Added on Fri, 06 Feb 2015 00:04:54 +0000

A lovely little river spot, easily accessible, plenty of parking by the water and situated in a picturesque village with plenty of amenities and activities. The Coquet is tidal here but paddlable at all times, though some weirs will need to be portaged outside the 2hrs each side of high tide (Amble). Outside these times shale banks and submerged rocks mean you may want to remove longer fins from your board. Around high tide it is possible to paddle the river from a weir 1.5km up stream of the put-in (a local landowner has expressly forbidden access further up) to the sea at Amble; take-out is either before the mariner or on the steps at the beginning of the pier, both have nearby parking and are on the right bank looking downstream. There is a beach immediately south of the harbour entrance but it is rocky and there is no direct egress so it's use is best avoid other than in a dire emergency. The harbour itself is a working port so be careful of both fishing and pleasure craft. The coal stays on the downstream left are in poor repair so, though picturesque, are best avoided. Immediately north of the harbour mouth there is lovely beach, which can generate good surf, but limited vehicular access makes egress a fairly long walk. The paddle downstream is a pleasant 3.5km as the river leaves it's sandstone valley and opens out into a salt marsh estuary. A shale bank in the river between the put-in and a small weir approximately 75m upstream provides fast flowing water at low tide that can be used as a treadmill for training though any fin longer than 4" will foul. A reasonably sheltered site but in the right conditions the wind will be funnelled up the river valley. Please be aware that the afore mentioned land owner has been incredibly hostile to all attempts at gaining access, so please do not inflame things further by "accidentally" going up stream. @SUPAyr https://supayr.wordpress.com

      Added on Tue, 03 Feb 2015 17:44:14 +0000

The eastern put-in of Loch Tay is a beach with reasonable parking. It is an easy paddle to a few islands as well as some of the historic Crannogs and Scotland's Crannog Centre. Please do not land on the crannogs, they are archaeological sites. If you the island you're heading to is suspiciously round and appears to be made of piled up stone, it's a crannog. Landing may be possible at the Scottish Crannog Centre's beach if you wish to visit the centre, but if you're considering doing this please contact them in advance and abide by their decision. Loch Tay is an excellent venue with an ideal put-in for teaching, training and novices. Remember that it is a popular site with many different users and a little respect and a wide birth does wonders for inter-sport relations.

Plenty of parking, nice little café, space to set up and several beaches to launch from. Loch Doon is a reservoir and as such the water level can vary a lot in a short space of time. Depending on the water level the northern put-in may have a small lagoon (too small and shallow to teach in) or gravel beaches. The café is open almost everyday from early Spring to mid Autumn and at weekends during all but the worst of the winter. Beware of the intakes for the dam but otherwise a fairly sheltered and easily accessible site good in most wind conditions. Though rocky with a steep drop into deep water a profusion of grass and pebble beaches make the shore easy to land on at almost any point. Nearby café is a definite boon as is the osprey nest just across the loch but please be considerate and avoid using their carpark. A lovely nature walk over the moor and back up the river Doon gorge starts from the same carpark. @SUPAyr https://supayr.wordpress.com

Makes an ideal launch site for trips around the south end of the loch or the start/finish of an end-2-ender. Nice, sheltered little bay in the crook of the promontory offers calm conditions in most weathers with enough space for novices or to practice drills. Easy access and easy launching from either beach (north or south side of promontory) or rock shelf (south). A short paddle takes you to the ruins of a castle which was moved when the valley was flooded to form a reservoir during the Second World War. The facade of the castle was rescued and reassembled on the loch side by the carpark. Plenty of parking and space to set up. Very popular in summer. Plenty of wild camping pitches.

Rupert Vidion reviewed Loch Ken Mid
      Castle Douglas - United Kingdom
      Added on Sun, 01 Feb 2015 16:26:04 +0000

Loch Ken is a long, wiggly body of water with lots of little inlets, tributaries, islands and outflows to explore. Many migratory and native species of bird make Loch Ken their home, including Red Kites which can be seen hunting over the open fields of the lochs south eastern edge. Red squirrels are a common site in the trees on the western shore of the loch, though you may need you binoculars (make sure they a 1) water proof 2) float 3) are clipped off to you!). Even in poor weather Loch Ken makes for a pleasant paddle, with it's wiggly and sheltered nature keeping the worst of the wind off. The mid point put-in is easy to find and there's plenty of parking, though in high season it does get busy and parking may be an issue. From the carpark simply walk down the slipway and launch from there or the adjacent small shale beach. This put-in is used by canoers, kayakers, jet skiers, small power boats, big power boats, etc., etc., ad nauseum and can get very busy at the beginning and end of the day in summer. We all know how quick it is to launch a SUP but please be courteous and wait your turn to launch. A little respect and a wide birth go a long way. Loch Ken is a very popular destination, attracting enthusiasts of all types, and as such, even in the middle of winter one will encounter a variety of sizes of motor craft, many with fishing tackle in the water. Because of this it is a venue best left for intermediate to experienced paddlers. The usual warnings apply: assume any boat at anchor has gear in the water and that the skipper of any moving boat has their eyes glued firmly to the fish-finder. As always bit of respect and a wide birth goes a long way to maintaining good relations but remember you have as much right to be on the water as anyone else. On the subject of fishing tackle, lost gear and other detritus is not generally an issue outside of peak season; however there are many unexpectedly shallow areas of the loch, especially the south western shore, and lots of weed; for those with the luxury, fitting a weed fin is advisable if you plan on exploring the shore line. There is a shore base 4km north of the mid point put-in, so look out for water craft here, often being raced or in the hands of inexperienced users. Loch Ken Holiday Park (~300m south of the put in) rents out wetsuits, pedalos and and sit-on-top kayaks, so be wary of over exuberant children and "partying" adults in the water near here during the holidays! All in all Loch Ken is a lovely venue with reliable conditions but this comes with caveat that because of this it is very popular with all forms of water craft and water user.
