The ice finally melted so I paddled Sawyers Pond. It was a beautiful day with the air temperature near 50 degrees. When I arrived, there were three scuba divers in the pond. When they finished their dive they said the water temp. was 39 degrees.

Rupert Vidion reviewed Loch Ken Mid
      Castle Douglas - United Kingdom
      Added on Sun, 01 Feb 2015 16:26:04 +0000

Loch Ken is a long, wiggly body of water with lots of little inlets, tributaries, islands and outflows to explore. Many migratory and native species of bird make Loch Ken their home, including Red Kites which can be seen hunting over the open fields of the lochs south eastern edge. Red squirrels are a common site in the trees on the western shore of the loch, though you may need you binoculars (make sure they a 1) water proof 2) float 3) are clipped off to you!). Even in poor weather Loch Ken makes for a pleasant paddle, with it's wiggly and sheltered nature keeping the worst of the wind off. The mid point put-in is easy to find and there's plenty of parking, though in high season it does get busy and parking may be an issue. From the carpark simply walk down the slipway and launch from there or the adjacent small shale beach. This put-in is used by canoers, kayakers, jet skiers, small power boats, big power boats, etc., etc., ad nauseum and can get very busy at the beginning and end of the day in summer. We all know how quick it is to launch a SUP but please be courteous and wait your turn to launch. A little respect and a wide birth go a long way. Loch Ken is a very popular destination, attracting enthusiasts of all types, and as such, even in the middle of winter one will encounter a variety of sizes of motor craft, many with fishing tackle in the water. Because of this it is a venue best left for intermediate to experienced paddlers. The usual warnings apply: assume any boat at anchor has gear in the water and that the skipper of any moving boat has their eyes glued firmly to the fish-finder. As always bit of respect and a wide birth goes a long way to maintaining good relations but remember you have as much right to be on the water as anyone else. On the subject of fishing tackle, lost gear and other detritus is not generally an issue outside of peak season; however there are many unexpectedly shallow areas of the loch, especially the south western shore, and lots of weed; for those with the luxury, fitting a weed fin is advisable if you plan on exploring the shore line. There is a shore base 4km north of the mid point put-in, so look out for water craft here, often being raced or in the hands of inexperienced users. Loch Ken Holiday Park (~300m south of the put in) rents out wetsuits, pedalos and and sit-on-top kayaks, so be wary of over exuberant children and "partying" adults in the water near here during the holidays! All in all Loch Ken is a lovely venue with reliable conditions but this comes with caveat that because of this it is very popular with all forms of water craft and water user.

      Pitlochry - United Kingdom
      Added on Fri, 30 Jan 2015 17:30:46 +0000

Ardgualich Farm is a caravan park and campsite with it's own (small) private beach. Though mainly aimed at caravaners there are two camping areas, the smaller of which is big enough for three two person tents and a couple of cars and is adjacent to the site's private beach. If booked in advance it is possible to have this entire mini-peninsula and the beach to yourselves for the weekend. Access to the loch is also possible from the larger camping field however it is somewhat more difficult. Approximately eight paddle strokes from the beach there is a picturesque little island. The water between the peninsula and the island is fairly sheltered so an ideal spot for drills or teaching even with the wind blowing. East of this put-in the loch becomes tortuous as it narrows towards it's outflow. There are one or two small islands and an interesting shore line. Loch Tummel is technically a reservoir and as such it ends abruptly at a dam, so take care. The main body of the loch is to the west, it is wider and significantly more exposed here and can be challenging if the weather turns. Though only 890m at its widest, with the right wind waves of 60-70cm and less than 3m apart are not unusual. There is a shore base on the southern shore towards the western end. It is primarily sailing craft though there are normally safety boats (RHIBs) in the water if sailers are out. Their courses are clearly marked with buoys and they generally avoid the northern shore, presumably because of wind shadow. They are a friendly bunch and have previously rendered aid and hospitality to other water users in need. With prior discussion it may even be possible to park and put-in here but if you're considering this please contact them in advance and abide by their decision whatever it may be. A little bit of respect and a wide birth goes a long way in inter-sport relations. The loch is stocked with fish and there is an active boat angling club based there. The usual warnings apply: assume any boat at anchor has gear in the water and that the skipper of any moving boat has their eyes glued firmly to the fish-finder If you're considering making a weekend of it Loch Tummel is an excellent venue.
