Rupert Vidion reviewed Loch Bradan - West
      Maybole - United Kingdom
      Added on Sat, 21 Mar 2015 21:53:49 +0000

Loch Bradan is another one of those ubiquitous reservoirs of the Galloway Forest. It sits atop a steep gravel path, nestled amongst the hills of the Galloway Highlands. Slightly unusually Bradan is dammed at both ends, the west dam being, for want of a better word, the inflow and the east dam being the outflow. Access is either from a number of forestry tracks that branch from an unnamed road that leads south from Straiton, joining the A714 just north of Newton Stewart or from the Carrick Forest Drive which branches from the road that runs along the western shore of Loch Doon. Be careful when planning your route, Google Maps doesn’t distinguish between ‘C’ roads, forestry roads and goat tracks. Speaking of goat tracks, none of the roads are in great repair so take care and maybe leave the sports car at home for this one. Bradan sits in evergreen plantations to the west and open heather heath to east, giving the feeling of paddling from a close forest into an expansive hilltop landscape. More practically this means the western end of the loch provides a sheltered paddling spot in all by easterly winds. At only 3km at it’s longest Bradan doesn’t generate particularly big swell but would make an excellent location for a down-winder in the right conditions but would require a lot of driving for a fairly short ride. Put-Ins and Take-Outs I recommend putting in at the western dam, parking is waterside, there’s a water level grassy shelf and when the water level drops there’s a beach to launch from. Access is also possible near the eastern dam and several places along the northern shore. Recommended Paddles A rough ‘Y’ shape and with a shore line of about 10.5 km there’s plenty for a day’s paddling; I recommend the 6km out and back from one dam to the other if a full tour of the loch seems a little too much. Loch Bradan is pretty perfectly sized for a Microadventure, two hours paddling in the evening, an over night camp and then an hour in the morning. There is a lot of evidence of wild camping (which, if you’re doing it right, there shouldn’t be) so I’d guess it is tolerated but I can’t find any record of an official position on this. For more information about wild camping and Scottish law click http://bit.ly/1xsptRk. Caution should be taken around the eastern dam, the spillway there leads directly onto an impressive 25m near vertical slip! The western dam is an impressively stark strip of grey concrete, there’s no outflow or spillway here but there is an inlet channel tucked away on the southern edge.

Rupert Vidion reviewed Loch Lomond - Luss
      Alexandria - United Kingdom
      Added on Thu, 19 Mar 2015 19:10:35 +0000

I was going to start this by saying "great little spot" but at 39km long, 8km and 190m deep in some places, that would be a little disingenuous. The southern end of Loch Lomond has lots of islands to explore. Some are essentially small rocks with a single tree perched atop, others have dwellings, ruins, castles, herds of deer and even a population of wild wallabies on Inchconnachan! Luss is a small village just off the A82 on the western shore of the loch. Luss is ideally placed to access the main island group from their northern end. There's plenty of parking, various cafés and a hotel. Parking in the large waterfront carpark is free between the end of October and beginning of April but there is a charge at all other times. If you have a SatNav use postcode G83 8PA. There is an extensive and pleasant artificial beach attached to the carpark. Not really a sandcastle beach but an excellent put-in with a shallow shelf that drops off into deep water. There are plenty of possible routes either following the shore or touring the islands. Be aware that Lomond is big enough that a fair swell can develop and it is easy to get caught a kilometre from shore. Wild camping is permitted on the shores of the northern end, in formal campsites on the eastern shore but forbidden on the islands. Landing on and exploring the islands is okay as long as you don't damage anything but be aware they are privately owned. Loch Lomond is very popular with pleasure boaters in the summer so care must be taken. There are lots of marker buoys in the loch and knowing what they indicate makes life easier and safer. VHF can be used here but only really for ship-to-ship communication. There is a voluntary rescue boat which operates on the loch. The usual advice stands: you have as much right to be on the water as anyone else but assume those on bigger vessels aren't looking for you and haven't seen you.
