50.1km to celebrate the 1st day of Spring. More than 7 hours on the board... ;)

Route: I started from "Le Vengeron", I went through Céligny, & Nyon... and then, just before Gland (km 20), I thought I could eat perch "fillets", on the other side of the lake, in Yvoire ... but it was quite foggy... and without to realize it, I make a 360 turn on myself (4km), so I thought to finally see Yvoire .. but in fact it was Nyon again! (look at the picture) :D The positive thing is that it help me to realize that I had a very good sense of disorientation :D So, accepting my failure, I left to fall back on and return to Nernier, head up to Hermance, then "La Belotte" and finally "Le Vengeron". .. The last part, was to make a cross from "La Belotte" to "Le Vengeron" it was a little epic ... strong wind with gusts and anarchic waves over 50cm, all arriving transverse ... So, what had to happen, happened: I got wiped-out of the board, 300 meters from the my final destination ... This is allowing me to confirm that the water is still cold at this season :D

Nutrition:2 hours before I got a shaker of 35grams of Microfiltered Whey Protein (100%). I also eat rice (brown organic rice) mixed with, coco milk, honey and raw organic almond pasta, and raw organic cacao powder (the whole stuff was almost 1 kilogram). I have also drink a lot before to start. I have bring with me 1.4 liter of energy beverage (quite diluted to not upset my stomach) and also 0.6 liter of Whey Creatine proteins. Result: I didn't suffered of dehydration or hunger.

Conditions: the weather was gloomy, it rained on the major part of the route, there was also wind and waves, glassy parts sometime... and fog in some parts, some moments were a mix of everything ;) ...

Rupert Vidion reviewed Loch Bradan - West
      Maybole - United Kingdom
      Added on Sat, 21 Mar 2015 21:53:49 +0000

Loch Bradan is another one of those ubiquitous reservoirs of the Galloway Forest. It sits atop a steep gravel path, nestled amongst the hills of the Galloway Highlands. Slightly unusually Bradan is dammed at both ends, the west dam being, for want of a better word, the inflow and the east dam being the outflow. Access is either from a number of forestry tracks that branch from an unnamed road that leads south from Straiton, joining the A714 just north of Newton Stewart or from the Carrick Forest Drive which branches from the road that runs along the western shore of Loch Doon. Be careful when planning your route, Google Maps doesn’t distinguish between ‘C’ roads, forestry roads and goat tracks. Speaking of goat tracks, none of the roads are in great repair so take care and maybe leave the sports car at home for this one. Bradan sits in evergreen plantations to the west and open heather heath to east, giving the feeling of paddling from a close forest into an expansive hilltop landscape. More practically this means the western end of the loch provides a sheltered paddling spot in all by easterly winds. At only 3km at it’s longest Bradan doesn’t generate particularly big swell but would make an excellent location for a down-winder in the right conditions but would require a lot of driving for a fairly short ride. Put-Ins and Take-Outs I recommend putting in at the western dam, parking is waterside, there’s a water level grassy shelf and when the water level drops there’s a beach to launch from. Access is also possible near the eastern dam and several places along the northern shore. Recommended Paddles A rough ‘Y’ shape and with a shore line of about 10.5 km there’s plenty for a day’s paddling; I recommend the 6km out and back from one dam to the other if a full tour of the loch seems a little too much. Loch Bradan is pretty perfectly sized for a Microadventure, two hours paddling in the evening, an over night camp and then an hour in the morning. There is a lot of evidence of wild camping (which, if you’re doing it right, there shouldn’t be) so I’d guess it is tolerated but I can’t find any record of an official position on this. For more information about wild camping and Scottish law click http://bit.ly/1xsptRk. Caution should be taken around the eastern dam, the spillway there leads directly onto an impressive 25m near vertical slip! The western dam is an impressively stark strip of grey concrete, there’s no outflow or spillway here but there is an inlet channel tucked away on the southern edge.
