Tried to use the Sup Trotters app twice, but it would automatically quit and I would have to restart. Beautiful afternoon, and the shore was completely changed at the Marina from last time.

Strong headwinds blowing from the North so I sprinted straight into the wind 1.3km (to a green pole that marks the oceanside border of safe waterway to the boat marina) then returned to beach before dark.
Just needed a quick workout today and the headwind and incoming tide/current made it challenging going out and during the return through the unorganized chop.

Entered the 26+Celsius/80 degrees Fahrenheit water about two hours after low tide so paddled out against the incoming tide/current on my one mile (1.6km) sprint to the cliffs.

3mph NW headwind at the beginning of the session that decreased with the setting sun.

Enough swell and water movement to move the camera around during while stopped so felt fortunate to get some clear photos. Deleted about the same amount as uploaded due to poor image quality.
Saw many large sea urchins, some venomous (shy) sea snakes resting on the sea floor, and some yellow-colored fish but not much else in the fading light.

Today's paddle yielded a very memorable sunset in a land that frames so many beautiful sunsets that one can begin to take them for granted. This one made me want to share with fellow SUPTrotters and grateful we now live in a fully immersed digital age. Instead of worrying about whether or not my film would survive a trip home I wondered if I had taken any photos that had come close to capturing even a fraction of the sunset's actual beauty. Before the digital camera era, I had lost complete sets of photographic records of more than one trip: a month in South Africa, a week in Germany and Austria and another two-week trip to Okinawa prior to moving here: but, those losses resulted from x-ray machine exposed film and not picture-blurring movements of waves and currents or the potential inability of my iPhone 5SE to capture pictures worth thousands of words.
Will post a video of the session tomorrow.

Thanks for reading and I hope you like the photos.
      Respectfully,
      Mitchell

      Crazy SUP Session.
From Beaufort 2 to Beaufort 6 in the span of about 30 minutes with no indication of the sudden change on the two different radars and current satellite photos that I check before each and every SUP session.

Started out as a sprint to the cliffs and then the conditions changed rapidly as a storm cell crossed the island about 10 km away.
The rising tidal flow pushed from my 3 o'clock, swells approaching from 4 o'clock, winds blowing from behind (6 o'clock), sea wall bounce from 7 through 10 o'clock and the currents swirled and changed to create the sloppiest, most unpredictable and craziest conditions to date. I captured all but three photos from lower quality GoPro Hero video frames.

Weather changes rapidly on this Pacific island surrounded by strong currents ( See Yahoo current site I also check before SUPing here: http://weather.yahoo.co.jp/weather/wave/11.html?c=2015092309&m=wind ) but this session soon became an unprecedented experience for me.
See Photo Captions for more session information.

Great session. Tide coming in (high tide about 1.25 hours after finish). Wind less than 5 km/hr and waves 0.2-0.5m/4 to 8 second intervals- Beaufort Scale: 1. Started about 30 minutes before sunset. Improving stroke but still need to start the recovery sooner by beginning to pull the paddle out of the water once I reach my toes. Still too much "drag" past my feet.
Caught a few small waves before sprinting home. Perfect weather: about 28C /Humidity about 50%. Pictures from GoPro Video Still Captures. Used the GP video to analyze stroke. Did a warm-down across to the fishing village area before a 90% sprint back to "finish line" jetty.

Paddled earlier in the day than usual and experienced, once again, how heat and humidity really makes any conditions more challenging.
Very slight headwind during the first leg of the "triangle", waves 0.1-0.3 and about 3-4 seconds apart (or 5-8 meters between rolling swell) overall about a 2 on the Beaufort Scale Torsten ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaufort_scale ).
The second leg provided mostly cross-swell so I chose to take a less direct line so I could use the swell and the slight wind to hopefully decrease my overall time.
The last leg of the triangle, the humidity and heat reminded me of their presence when I felt leg cramps for the first time in a very long time. Pushed myself to complete exhaustion and had to actually sit while recovering for about five minutes. Overall a great workout.

Most challenging paddle session in 5 years of SUP.
Winds blowing from my left at 18-25km/hr on my way to the cliffs.
Wind swell very unpredictable and without any sort of pattern.
Slack tide meant less order and predictability in terms of current and tidal flows.
Distance between waves (0.5-1.25m) measured between 3.0 and 6.0 meters. Many times I found myself bridging two waves, slapping my carbon board on the downside of waves and then immediately piercing into the next 1+meter face before the excellent buoyancy of the Starboard Carbon Race Open Ocean took me to the crest of the wave only to begin the jarring, challenging, and washing-machine like experience again, and again.
A month ago I would not have attempted these conditions due to my level of fitness at the time; so, it proved very satisfying that my only concern during this milestone session related to the punishment my carbon fiber board had to endure: an unprecedented amount in either of our SUP lives.
No pics of the more challenging moments. I tried but the half dozen or so all looked out of focus due to the motion of the ocean.
Almost took out the GoPro but the suction mount would have surely failed. May be at a fitness level that requires I glue a more permanent GoPro mount onto my board: but, a video probably would have captured too much movement to make it an enjoyable cinematic experience.

Departed late considering the days of Summer have begun to significantly shorten.
Paddled towards the cliffs along my usual path (towards center of cliff line) for the first 1 km into the rising tidal current, very small swell (0.10-0.20m/4-6 second intervals) and an 8-12km/h headwind.
During kilometer 2 (~1km to 2.25km) the headwind significantly increased to 15-25km/h and the swells grew to 0.5-1.0m/5-8 second intervals.
At approximately 2.3km I had reached a wind protected area close to the cliffs and the wind dropped to null and the swell also fell to less than 0.15m/5-8 second intervals.
Paddled less aggressively from 2.5km to 3km (parallel to the cliffs) which marked the end of the cliffs (cape) almost exactly.
Once at the point/cape (Maeda Point) I pointed the nose of the board at the incoming 1.0-1.25m uninhibited East China Sea swell and snapped off a few photos. Most photos proved underexposed (iPhone) in the low light of the waning civil twilight.
Decided to follow the path of the larger, land-seeking swell and took a direct route home over the dark depths(100m+) that border the coral reef thinking that riding with the swells would decrease the time needed to paddle home in the darkening sky.
The experience taught me that catching some of the sloping swell did increase my speed for 2-5 seconds about 3 times a minute but the trough between the swell felt like paddling in quicksand and worked to slow me down as I paddled up the backs of swells more than I rode down their fronts.
The clocked return time proved that paddling parallel to the coast (where the coastal current flows faster, with more consistent speed and less wind) would have been faster and less taxing than the direct swell path from Maeda Point to my home beach...at least today.
Even though I have paddled 9 of the last 12 days in same general area, I have still learned something new each and every session. Whether I learn something new about catching waves (just learning to surf though I've SUPed for the last 5 years), reading currents, improving my stroke, timing my stroke in order to start my pull after "stabbing" the apex of waves/swell, trimming my board by moving forward or aft, or how lower-hand paddle shaft placement affects reach and torque (amongst a great many other paddle efficiency variables), SUP training has consistently provided healthy portions of new knowledge.
Since the beginning of July I have lost over 4 kg and my resting heart rate has lowered by over 20 beats per minute proving to me that SUP can be as good for the heart as it is for the soul.

1.7km sprint to the cliffs (due west) against incoming tide and very small swell (0.15-0.5meters) 8-12 seconds apart. Less than 5kph headwind. Had to dodge five kayaks filled with young female tourists (18-25yrs. old) during last 200 meters of sprint to cliffs. Spent about 25 minutes trying to catch some increasing swells after sunset but heading home before the skies grew completely dark. Incoming tide made for an easier sprint paddle home.

Took a board out for my wife so I just sprinted to the cliffs and back while she stayed closer to shore for her workout.
Paddled against the current, an incoming tide, and just a slight headwind at my 2 o'clock on the way to the cliffs where about halfway (@~0.8km) the swells grew to ~1-1.25 meters about 4-6 seconds apart .
Took a more circuitous return route to ride with the swell the last quarter of the session. Tried a new iPhone app (Runmeter) to map my session, record time and speeds: and, I think I like it better than Runkeeper. Shows more detail at each interval and much more information about the training session.

(Pics of Okinawa Cranes) Sprinted to the cliffs using the Quickblade Kanaha Elite Race Paddle instead of the larger, stiffer Laird Carbon Surf Paddle I have been using during the past six or so sessions. Easier on the joints and muscles and enabled me to maintain a faster, more consistent cadence.
Going out against a slight 8-12 kph headwind, tidal current (approximately same speed as headwind), and extremely small swell 0.1-0.2 meter swell. Wind slightly decreased on the return as the sun had fallen below the horizon (civil twilight).

Nearly polar opposite from the heavy sea-like conditions of just 24 hours ago. Almost flat and less than 3mph headwind during first leg (1.6km sprint to cliffs). Cruised along the cliffs taking some pics then along Yamada (Malibu Beach) before trying to sprint into some

Last of the Typhoon Goni swell...Very Challenging conditions.
Paddled directly into 1+meter swells 1-2 seconds apart and a 5-8mph headwind for one kilometer then rode parallel to the swells for 0.3km before catching a 1/2 dozen 1-1.5m waves. Almost as challenging paddling back home though I took a route closer to shore on the account of darkness (twilight): less wind but swells ranged from perpendicular to my 7 o'clock as well as some significant bounce off the sea wall to my starboard (right) side -- some washing-machine action required I power through most of the way home. Glad to have increased my fitness level during the last month.

Heavy Typhoon Goni Surf. Fifth surf session and largest by far. 1.5 - 2.O meter waves. Wiped out about as much as I rode. Fun but exhausting.
